Director Vincent Coen and DOP Guillaume Vandenberghe meet up with four Moroccan friends, living in an all-Maghreb part of Brussels. In their spare time the four of them direct Hollywood-inspired cop films on cheap video cameras with their amateur actor friends. Their films never make it to the movie houses, nor do they ever get released on dvd; yet the boys’ amibitions and enthusiasm never seem to vanish. This is a portrait about a community, mostly unknown for the people in Brussels, yet rooted in our civilisation and revealing a connection to Western – popular – culture and a society’s ambition to be a part of it. In ‘Urban Legends’ we get an insight view on a Maghreb community, while the community itself shows us – through their films – how they perceive Belgian society and Western ‘values’.
